ABSTRAC T Urban poverty incidence is increasing in Bangladesh with rapid urbanization. In the last few years there has been growing awareness about the seriousness of the problems of urban poverty and the need for undertaking poverty alleviation programs. Poor people of a slum may face different problems in different magnitude and may also be facilitated by different services when the scenario may be reverse in case of another slum in some aspects or may not. The present study is an endeavor in this direction. Several studies have been conducted on socio-economic conditions of the urban poor which give overall idea, problems and policies for the urban poor, while the spatial variations of socio-economic conditions of the urban poor portray differences and causes of various problems and prospects of the poor people to obtain appropriate policy measures for them.
